Starknet opens seven-day vote on independent post-quantum L1

Starknet opened a seven-day STRK poll on researching an independent post-quantum Layer 1, a first step that would not approve a move away from Ethereum.

Starknet opens seven-day vote on independent post-quantum L1

Starknet opened a seven-day vote on whether to research becoming an independent post-quantum Layer 1, asking STRK stakers and delegators to weigh in on a possible break from Ethereum. The poll closes Oct. 22; a “Yes” would start research, not approve a move.

The Starknet community forum proposal says the poll is non-binding. Starknet is currently an Ethereum Layer 2, and the proposal says parts of its security depend on Ethereum’s timeline. An independent chain could give Starknet more control over those parts.

What does the vote ask STRK holders to decide?

The vote asks whether Starknet should explore the idea further. According to Unchained’s report, the Snapshot poll opened at 09:32 UTC on Oct. 15 and closes at the same time on Oct. 22.

Voters can choose “Yes,” “No,” or “Neutral.” A yes result would launch research and lead to more detailed proposals and polls. A no result means the network continues its post-quantum work as an Ethereum Layer 2. If the result is neutral, the forum discussion stays open until more questions are answered.

That distinction matters: this is not a vote to leave Ethereum. Any later decision to make the move would need a separate governance process. STRK would remain the token under either path, and bridges from Ethereum to Starknet would stay open, according to the proposal.

Why is Starknet considering its own chain?

The proposal points to security and quantum resistance. Starknet already uses STARK proofs and native account abstraction, and says parts of the network under its control can become quantum-resistant soon. But its bridge and data availability depend on Ethereum, so their timing is tied to Ethereum’s upgrades.

Becoming an independent Layer 1 could remove that dependency and give Starknet greater control over its security. The proposal does not set a timeline for a transition. It also says Starknet’s post-quantum work can continue as a Layer 2 if voters reject further research.

For you, the immediate signal is whether STRK voters want the research to begin. Watch for the poll result when voting closes on Oct. 22 and for any later proposals that spell out what an independent chain would require.
